I always thought birmingham had the culture feel of a northern city in the South hence the rest of the state hates it.

This is true....Birmingham has more in common with and feels like a northern rustbelt city. Birmingham has more in common with places like Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Detroit, or Baltimore than it does other southern cities.
