Also this "efficiency" stat you keep hammering on has Virginia Tech at #7. A team that gave up 45 to Tenn and 31 to Syracuse so according to your most important stat VT's D is better than LSU and Auburn's D.

Not at all. The more complete metric gives you a better picture. If A&M wasn't getting stops, TFLs, turnovers, etc. they wouldn't rank high in DEF Efficiency. There's a reason coaches like Bellichek and Saban talk about yards per play and points per posession. Vegas sharps and handicappers too.

So far Virginia Tech has been playing very good defense this year. The defense wasn't the problem against UT, 5 turnovers was. VA Tech held them to 91 yards passing. Here you can see why scoring defense(by itself) can also be very misleading.
