Like when Temple beat Vandy EVERYTHING Franklin built was murdered that day. EVERYTHING.
everything was murdered when Franklin bolted to Penn State, which was inevitable. Temple was just proof that they were done after Franklin. It's not like they were going to be a good team in 2014, but Temple crushed their souls and caused them to lose 8 more games, most in blowouts

Not so fast. Sometimes programs make a good hire and keep the momentum going.
For example, I would argue Saban's program at LSU continued long after he was gone because LSU made the right hire with Les Miles. In the LSU example there wasn't a program killing moment for LSU (unless you want to argue SABAN's program died after 21-0 and all that was left was a Les Miles program).
If Vandy would have followed Franklin with a great hire they could have kept the party going. The Temple game was proof to the world that they failed at hiring a replacement. Hence why it is a significant game, the proof matters.
Hell OU beat us 0-77 because Fran was a moron. When we hired Fran is when we really killed RC's program. But we didn't know until 0-77.
It is a small but important difference.
