What makes you say that? Where are you from?

Well the question wasn't addressed to me but I'll answer it.

I've lived in or around Memphis for about twenty years of my life, longer if you count living in Northern Mississippi where we'd go up to Memphis every month or so. I don't currently live near it but since I frequently visit my folks who live across the river I've been within the last month.

Memphis can be a shithole of a city.

Now don't get me wrong, the nice parts of Memphis are as nice as any city you will find in America. The food is great there, it has an active nightlife, and there are some wonderful neighborhoods within the city. The nice parts of Memphis are nicer then the nice parts of DC in my humble opinion.

The problem is that the bad areas are about as bad as you can get and not be in Detroit and thanks to the odd patchwork nature of Memphis you can go from million dollar homes to urban war zone in just one block.

Frick yes stick to well lit areas, SCRooster is dead right about that. Go, have a good time, but don't wander into the bad parts of town.

Most people on here are pussies. Go the frick wherever you want. I do that in Memphis, Nola, Chicago, where the frick ever. If someone gets too close you don't know or steps up, blast his arse and kick the shite out if him. Had to do that many times in these places. Frick them sob's.
My advice to you son, there's a lot of bad people in this world. When you come across one and it gets bad, Hit first and hit to kill. You'll know when the time comes....... You'll know.

Ok wait.. I think it's fairly well known that there are some awful neighborhoods in Memphis (Orange Mound, Frazier, Whitehaven, etc.), but why the frick would anyone go there? I've lived in Memphis for over 25 years excluding college and I've never seen those areas. I currently live on Mud Island, great area. Tourists typically don't "accidentally" find themselves cruising down Pendleton Street.. Anywhere on Beale is safe. Midtown is safe. East Memphis is beyond safe. Suburbs are safe. Really makes people sound like pure hicks when they throw a blanket over an entire city because of a couple of bad streets.
