This is an easy post to make in retrospect. First, there is no reason that a team can't go from losing a few games in a row in the last season to having a very successful next season. In fact, LSU did exactly that from 2002 to 2003.
Second, there were several reasons why LSU fans were optimistic. We clearly have the talent, and we had hoped our coach was "woken up" by last year's events.
We were wrong. Obviously. But that doesn't make the narrative "lunacy," just overly optimistic.

In retrospect? People have been saying this about the ridiculous LSU hype since May.
And this is why. There is no tangible reason to expect a 10 year coach to all of a sudden "wake up" and change, or for glaring weaknesses to just disappear. It was a snowball of media narrative that just melted away all legitimate concerns about the roster and coaching staff.
