just to nitpick, but similar, it's not just waiving the year, they also sign off on the particular school

Saban played a part in this as well. He tried to use the waiver as a pressure point to keep Smith at bama. Smith was already gone. Had Saban signed the waiver(which coaches do for schools they arent playing against quite often) there would have never been anything said in the media.

Saban signed off on UGA but not to waive the year. Again, the rule the league has agreed upon.

yeah?...and?....as pointed out, Smith was considered a valuable player who was a starter in the majority (not all) of our schemes
