Yeah. I had seen this and even mentioned it to some Alabama people when they insisted it was not correct and that he was given his release immediately. I could not find any other article saying what the one you linked (And until now had believed) said.

I don't know what to believe...and truth is nobody does. It's another situation where everybody is in covering their own behind mode and we will probably never know the entire story. And....basically...what difference does it ultimately matter? Smith got his release and it's over. It's probably best for all concerned that it is over.

I was looking for the link where the Alabama fans were insisting Chris Black got an immediate/automatic release and said the article was wrong:

No, he did not. He asked for and received a RELEASE automatically. There is no WAIVER necessary because he has met the residency requirement.
