Honestly, very depressing.
College athletics across the board is pretty depressing and not for the faint of heart. It is predatory in nature and while there are plenty of success stories, there are just as many that are victimized by it. A lot of it begins and ends with recruiting; prospects aren't properly informed or educated about what they're actually getting themselves into (athletically and academically).
In a lot of cases, you're talking about taking an underprepared kid with delusions of grandeur out of a low socioeconomic setting and piling on the mental and personality hurdles of every college student (and in some cases the first generation college student and African American male college student hurdles as well) along with the immense pressures of being a high profile athlete at a high profile university. It can get real dark real quick when the proper support systems aren't in place and that's to say nothing of what happens to these people when they leave school (with or without a degree) and find out that they're either not healthy or not good enough to continue playing a game they've staked everything on (including and especially their identity).
We as fans have it so damn easy; our side of the equation is incredibly enjoyable. The student-athlete and coaching side of the coin, though...
