We have to remember, since 2008, Auburn has had Paul Rhodes, Ted Roof, Brian Van Gorder, Ellis Johnson, Will Muschamp and Kevin Steele as defensive coordinators. That's a lot of turnover. On offense, Gus Malzahn's offense only performs well with a great athlete that has the ability to also pass.
With all of that turnover on the defensive side of the ball, maybe some folks were correct in their summation a few years ago that Gus' offensive philosophy can't coincide with a top shelf defense?

Well if we still has muschamp I'm sure it would. Maybe Steele can get some consistency and have a good defesne. But the offense doesn't really hold the defense back that much

You could say that and many do, but it has no basis. Plays per game stressing the defense? That holds no water because AU has never been more than middle of the pack. A shitty offense like we had last year and 2012 (which was a pro-style and not Gus) puts a lot more stress with a lot of 3-outs.
