When I grew up in south Texas, males were encouraged to stay away from participating in the ban because it was considered a less than manly endeavor. I wouldn't say it was looked on as full-on homo, but certainly trended that way.
Do you think this is still the case? Would you let your son join the school band?

Encouragement wasn't required...it wasn't allowed.

Whatever makes him happiest. Don't care if he is into men or people think he might be. If anybody is offended, good for them. *insert something about equality for everybody.

If I had a son I'd make sure he never read one of your threads.

In our small town football, basketball, baseball players, were in the band as well.

Yes. In fact I wish that mindset hadn't been prevalent in the late 1970's. I would have joined the band instead of being a third team lineman.
At least I would have seen the field before the 3 or 4 minute mark in the 3rd qtr.

Some guys are linebackers, some guys are trumpet players. In my life, I have found that people that would make fun of someone because they were good at something that wasn't something they cared for are complete losers.
I couldn't hit a high school curve ball. My parents didn't have a lot of money. I spent a lot of time with a nose in a book - had a great love for history and geography. Some guys made fun of me for this. Two guys actually showed up at an academic competition to make fun of the "nerds" and were escorted out. The academic endeavors got me a scholarship from MSU, and later a graduate fellowship at LSU. Today, those guys are complete losers, while I am just a guy that couldn't hit a high school curve ball.

I almost went to Alabama to major in cartography. If I would have known what GPS would have become I probably would have done so.

Rezana "Ceylan" Ozalp
A YPJ fighter in Syria who was rumored to have committed suicide when she was about to be captured by Daesh. Those rumors were apparently false and it was her friend who did so.

I'm a pretty old guy, and when I was in high school, I think that corps style of band was becoming popular. So not every band was doing that style and band was pretty interesting.
Now it seems everyone does it in Texas and they all are preparing for some competition and it can be pretty boring. So why I wouldn't discourage an athletically challenged or musically inclined son from joining band, I'd strike up a deal with him to play in his own band or join the jazz band so I wouldn't have to sit through his halftime shows.
Marching band -- great way to meet girls, so not faggy.
Jazz band - badass.
