Usually you see the extensions at the end of a season in response to vacancies that might be attractive to the candidate. But nobody was beating down our door for Gus in December and it would've been odd to give him one on the heels of a 6-6 season. That's why I think it was done in conjunction with Big Cat Weekend (or shortly thereafter).

I saw you mention that above and it made perfect sense to me. If they heard any of the recruits talking about the past two years and the upcoming schedule....maybe somebody speculated that Malzahn might not be there much longer and that spurred the extension. IF that is way happened, it would not be too far fetched to think another school is negative recruiting using that.
