You've described Gainesville, Florida to a T I think. Not sure what their healthcare job market is like, but I imagine it might be decent with a medical school there.

There are plenty of healthcare jobs with a VA, Shands (UF's teaching hospital), and North Florida regional.

However, it is about as far from ocean as you get in Florida. 1 1/2 hours. Though there are springs and lakes nearby.

For FL -

Gainesville has high taxes, high utilities in the city, and silly traffic issues. Move 15 miles in any direction from there and you can live comfortably for less, with less headaches. Schools are better in Alachua county, but make sure you do your research. There are good schools surrounding them in other counties. There is the VA, Shands, UF healthcare all located, as well as plenty of other facilities. It is closer to the gulf coast and lots of river fun while still not too far to the beaches of the Atlantic. I live about 30 minutes east in the edge of Clay county with good schools.

Ocala has plenty of old folks that require health care and puts you less than 1.5 hours from either coast. Schools are ok, and right now prices are not bad on housing.

St Augustine/St Johns County is nice, with great schools and the quaint atmosphere. The housing is pricey and traffic is getting bad. I really am not sure about work, but Jax is not far to commute depending where you start from and where you are headed.

Anything south of Ocala is out of my range. Jacksonville is a pit unless you have enough money for the beaches.

For GA I would only do Savannah if I could live outside the city or out on the islands. Nothing in the middle of the state is worth it unless you want small town life. I do like Thomasville and that area, but I like to quail hunt.
