Things that are possible:
Ole Miss has been successful landing the big time recruits they've gotten because they've played to their egos and questionable character traits through the party school reputation and emphasis on "all about me". This is what won these guys over. Possible, as evidenced by the fact they haven't been able to mold these guys into a consistent team oriented unit and remain focused enough to play for any kind of championship.
They've broken the rules but Freeze is clueless on this, as he is a country bumpkin who went from high school to the SEC in a short period of time and is just a good old boy. His inexperience is why they haven't been able to fit these piece parts together to build a championship machine. Possible.
Ole Miss and Oxford are both destination locations that offer a fun yet historical location to achieve excellence not only on the athletic field but in the classroom as well, which has struck a chord with the latest generation of highly ranked recruits. Unfortunately, the academic focus these kids possess results in them not being 100% devoted to football as with other SEC schools, therefore no championships to be had to date. This is the most probable scenario as I see it.
