A&M was originally planned as a branch of the University of Texas. In 1931 Texas state legislature split the University of Texas System's PUF endowment to include 1/3 going to A&M.

A&M is the oldest public university in Texas founded almost a decade earlier.

This has been hypothesized but never proven and never happened.
