December 2013
quote:

"I think he's going to be a nightmare," Cowherd said of Malzahn. "I am amazed that Alabama fans aren't concerned about Gus Malzahn."

"Nick is not great off the rails or against unpredictable coaches," Cowherd said. "He has more trouble with quirky than substantial. He'll go toe to toe with substantial. So I think Malzahn is built to give Nick trouble."

"I want all you Alabama fans, who love Finebaum and hate me, to know," Cowherd said. "Right now, you're driving around and I'm here to tell you that you're going to start to lose to Gus Malzahn.

"Next year, Auburn's going to be better than Alabama. Auburn is going to go into Tuscaloosa and beat Alabama. They're going to beat Florida State. They're going to win back-to-back national titles."

May 2015

“They return two offensive starters, they don’t know who their quarterback is. Their secondary, despite Nick’s brilliant secondary coaching, lost their best player and I don’t love it. And they have to replace their three best wide receivers. Well, they’re recruiting classes are good. So were LSU’s. When you’re bad at quarterback, you’re not a special football team. Also, in their conference, on their schedule, LSU, Auburn, Arkansas, A&M and Tennessee will all be better. Phyllis, I am sorry, Alabama is not a top-five team this year.”

July 2015
quote:

"It’s just got too many good teams. Alabama doesn’t have a quarterback, you can’t go into this year with no quarterback in that conference. You’re not going to win 12 games, you’re out of your mind."

"Alabama’s schedule is the toughest college schedule I have ever seen in my life. I have never seen a college schedule that tough. Ever. Auburn’s no day at the beach, that’s extreme. First week of October to first week of December it’s like 8 teams that could be ranked. Come on! Half of them on the road. You’re not going to beat all these teams."

“It’s just got too many good teams. Alabama doesn’t have a quarterback, you can’t go into this year with no quarterback in that conference. You’re not going to win 12 games, you’re out of your mind.

Post-Ole Miss 2015
quote:

"It's over. They'll win a bunch of games. It's over."

"Michigan State (there are better programs out there than Alabama)"

Yea, Cowherd is all over it.

In the years since Malzahn has gotten to Auburn they have tested Bama in certain ways. This years game was even close into the 4th quarter when Auburn had no business being in it. So to a degree Saban does have some problems with Malzahn, but he still gets the job done most of the time

And conventional wisdom says 'No QB' should lead to problems. It has for Saban's teams as well, but oftentimes their overall talent advantage still wins them the day

Saban may not be a better game day coach, but when it comes to recruiting and preparing, there's no one better.
