Kind of bizarre that people on this thread seem to want to continue to debate the idea that a school may have certain minimum academic standards, or academic standards for success, which may differ from particular scores that individual students may need to get in. If my competition is an exceptional athlete or artist, I am almost certainly going to have to make a better SAT score because they have already excelled in an endeavor and perhaps established themselves as leaders -- they are going to be a much better asset to the school and the student body than I am.

You don't let exceptional athletes in because they are dumber. You let them in because they have skills and experience that others don't have. They have met or exceeded the standard of having unique students.
