Houston has the world's largest medical center and is #1 in the world for medicine.
Houston is the #1 manufacturer of goods exported from the US.
Houston is the capital city of the world's oil industry.
It has a LOT going for it. Unfortunately, it is extremely unattractive, ultra-spread out, and generally grimy. But, that's what it is: a hard-working, no-nonsense town that people only live in because of their jobs. It doesn't really claim to be anything it isn't, nor do its residents. I have a lot more respect for it than Dallas, where people put on airs and act like they live in NYC instead of South Oklahoma, which is closer to the reality.

There are specific neighborhoods that are very pretty, but overall it isn't much to look at for sure.

All true.
But it has some very nice attractive areas as well. I could say that is probably true with a lot of major cities or towns. It does lack some of the old world big city history because it didn;t become a big city until much later.
As far as grimy, I felt much cleaner in Houston then I did when I visited Chicago, New York, and Cleveland a few years back. Sure some areas were nice, but a lot was just nasty. Plus the people are uglier in the north.
