The achievement factor is definitely a huge positive to anything. Ripping effects throughout your life.
I'm sure you've thought of this, but I'd caution with the long distance running and emphasis on making a fast time on a regular basis -- especially moving into that next chapter. 45 is still youngish. That changes soon.
If you can afford a rower, I'd get check that out. It's not a gimmicky thing to buy.
Since you live in a warm weather climate, I'd mix in bike riding more. Keeps those knees and ham's from taking the stress.
Lightweight, semi-fast paced circuit stuff too.
