And I'm saying what you're doing works -- but it's not good for overall health, and it sets the body up to balloon if carbs are reintroduced.
ETA: And you may or may not be doing this -- but the concept of calorie counting obviously emphasizes calories and often doesn't emphasize nutrient intake, which is key.

I'm told all the time how my old school meathead routines are useless. It's usually from someone who has to change every few months because of being bored or hit the dreaded wall.

I said counting calories is a dogma.
We now know diets such as the Atkins are bad for overall health -- although they result in short term weight loss.
Eating more good fats, more good calories, and not relying on such a high proportion of protein is still going to allow a person to lose weight and at the same time create a healthier person.
If you all want to discuss things than you must participate as a reader.

I do CrossFit and some places are much better than others. I've never been to one that pushes crap you don't need like the other guy said. I will agree with him that some places do not focus on form as much as they should. The one I go to requires people to do an "elements" class where you learn all of the movements before you can start classes. You definitely have to leave your pride at the door because you need to do less weight until you become proficient with movements. I personally love it and I'm in the best shape of my life. Just try the place out before you decide to join.

This reminds me.....I've always been curious why gyms close during the holidays. Right after Halloween people start thinking about weight because Thanksgiving is around the corner and they start thinking about the new year and a resolution to get back in shape and so forth. People really start thinking about exercise this time of the year. But gyms will be closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve, New Years Day and so on....breaks up someone's routine. Also, people get these days off work and consider it a perfect time to start exercising and then find the gym is closed. Seems to set the stage for missing business and not being able to seal the deal on some free passes, yada yada yada.

I started last fall for overall health (cholesterol & heart health in general) As a side benefit I did lose about 25 lbs. I'm still doing it for overall health. I don't think I'm doing it just for the enjoyment of running, I don't really enjoy running I guess, but I do love the physical results and the sense of achievement. I've found that setting a target and then pushing your body towards and beyond it is extremely psychologically rewarding.

The achievement factor is definitely a huge positive to anything. Ripping effects throughout your life.
I'm sure you've thought of this, but I'd caution with the long distance running and emphasis on making a fast time on a regular basis -- especially moving into that next chapter. 45 is still youngish. That changes soon.
If you can afford a rower, I'd get check that out. It's not a gimmicky thing to buy.
Since you live in a warm weather climate, I'd mix in bike riding more. Keeps those knees and ham's from taking the stress.
Lightweight, semi-fast paced circuit stuff too.

I finished my 6 week workout on sunday. I had two rest days, thanksgiving and then this past saturday. The rest of the time I did full body light workouts on a rest day.
Im going to restart it today. I was going to change plans but I was worried about starting a new longer plan and then running into busy season and not being able to hit the gym. So its one more run at that, and then p90x for busy season.

I haven't done any weight training since summer but I'm probably going to start back up now that my run miles are increasing
