Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama commit and nation's No. 1 QB, meets with Oregon Ducks

It was worth a shot.

Oregon Ducks coach Willie Taggart met with Alabama commit Tua Tagovailoa, the nation's No. 1 dual-threat quarterback, and his father for "about an hour-and-a-half" early Friday morning, according to Diane Tagovailoa, Tua's mother.

And while both men left the meeting impressed with Taggart and his pitch for the future of the Ducks football program, it appears it won't be enough to flip the coveted signal-caller.

"My husband and Tua really liked Coach Taggart," Diane Tagovailoa said. "The meeting was about an hour-and-a-half. My husband really loves him. They had a very good conversation. But at the end of the day, Tua stayed committed and coach was very understanding of that."

Tagovailoa, the Elite 11 MVP, is not expected to take a visit to Eugene.

"There's just not enough time," Diane Tagovailoa said. "After Sunday, I believe, is a dead period, and he'll be enrolling early to Alabama."

The 6-foot-1, 212-pound signal-caller once dreamed of going to Oregon, but the slow-play approach from the coaching staff dissolved the relationship.

"It's kind of hard when I'm not keeping in contact or I have no contact. It's hard to say that now, because of that," he told The Oregonian in April 2015. "I don't know if they are showing interest at any point in time. I know it's kind of early, especially since they have a recruiting process, but... it's all right."

Taggart delivered an impressive pitch to the Tagovailoa family, but it appears it won't be enough to sway the talented Marcus Mariota disciple.
