football may have peaked, but I don't see it "dying" or anything close to it for the foreseeable future

It's going to happen. The south will transition whole hog pretty quickly to hard core soccer fans once they change the pointy ball game rules or it dies out.

This is where I fall on the issue.

There are 30,000 fewer football players nationally than there were in 2009. So the exponential growth has most definitely halted.

The sport will probably plateau for a LONG time at or somewhere not far below the current level. Which, honestly, is fine with me in the long run.
