I too have made it known that my mother passed away prior to the holiday season yet they still reference her on almost a daily basis.

Personal attacks are taken to a cruel level with this bunch. If you look at this situation from a psychological standpoint, it's easy to pinpoint why anyone does anything. They feel completely inept when one of superior intelligence bombards them with facts and rationality. In turn, they stoop to callous and hurtful remarks, thinking that it will cut us to the core.
