What I find weird about articles like this, and I've seen several, is that they mirror the SECR mindset. That's fine for the SECR -- this site is built to troll. But actual journalists talking about 11 and 12 win seasons, or, indeed, any season without a national title, as being indisputably a failure is just ridiculous. There are 127 teams in CFB bowl series. Not a single one of them, even Bama, would consider a 12 win season with a visit to the CFP even remotely a bad season. Ranters can get away with implying that because they have other motives than journalistic integrity. But an actual newspaper columnist must realize how silly he sounds in an objective sense.

And yet everyone was doing just that after Alabama's loss to Ohio State in the semi-finals last year. Even Nick Saban had to scoff at all of those people at SEC Media Days. When sitting down for an interview with Finebaum he said, "Here we are, 12-win season, SEC champions, and everyone is asking me what went wrong."

The blame goes to the BCS and now the playoffs.
In the old bowl system, other than your conference, there was nothing to clearly win. Sure national titles were on the line, but they were speculative because the top two teams didn't play in a bowl. People were happy with double digit win seasons no matter if they got a title or not.
Now that someone CAN win it all, that is all that matters. Just like politics eventually journalists turn everything into a horse race.
