Not sure this is true. I think if the ball is kicked into the air and never touches the ground, then the receiving team player must be given an opportunity to catch the ball whether he signals fair catch or not.
Problem is, the receiving team didn't have a player there.

Spot on.
I stand corrected. I thought the ball was bounced with one of those one foot short hop kicks. But upon the replay, it looks like it was in the air all the time.
Clemson still didn't have anyone there to call for a fair catch, though.
