Tickets were oversold. Stubhub in particular could not fulfill the orders and started buying tickets back at 1.5x - 2xs the rate to fulfill for others

Several different travel agencies sold tickets +flights + hotels but didn't have enough tickets. Bunch of Auburn fans found this out upon arrival and purchased tickets in Phoenix for outrageous prices because they'd already gotten there. A couple in my friend group had their flights and hotel rooms reimbursed so they spent that money on tickets outside of the stadium.

Extreme shorting of tickets on secondary market sites like Stubhub. It got so bad that Stubhub themselves were offering to buy back tickets from Stubhub buyers at 2.5 times what they paid for them to cover the needed supply as game day approached.
