Their entire school curriculum basically focuses on why they should be ashamed to be German due to the Nazi past and how important it is not to support the Far Right.

We have a soft form of that going on here right now only the "centrist" position is slowly being pulled to the left over time so that what was centrist 20 years ago is no longer the center.

You are exactly correct.

To coin an old metaphor the pendulum still swings both ways ... but the pivot point of the pendulum has been shifted far left.

There is this thing, yin and yang. It applies to everything. And things usually go really bad when the yin and yang are out of balance.

That's where we are now.

Centrists are centrists. The Centrists are supporting the left in general elections now because of a small number of social issues.

The right will kick out people that support their views on business, trade, taxes, international politics, etc. because they cannot tolerate multiple positions on social issues within their own ranks.

Centrist: I don't support universal health insurance, but we do need some sort of universal health coverage. Maybe we put more support into low-cost clinics that will give the poor more access to basic care.
The Right: You fricking Commie.
