It's destroyed the bowl interest IMO.

How are the bowls any worse off than they were under the BCS system?

In the BCS system there were three tiers of bowls:

1. National Titles Games - 1 Game
2. BCS Bowls - 4 Games
3. Other bowls - The Rest

Going to a BCS bowl was seen as a major accomplishment of a program even if they weren't in the national title hunt.

Now we have two tiers:

1. Playoffs games - 3 Games
2. Other bowls - The Rest

The top tier got larger (growing from 1 to 3 games) but the second tier was eliminated for a net loss of two bowls worth bragging about. All other bowls below the playoffs level were devalued somewhat, just with some you can't tell because the value was already so low.
