It has always been that way. AU has always been the far superior school, AU grads have always made more money, AU has always attracted the smarter high school kids and so forth.
Bama has always known they were an inferior school, fan base, and institution. That has never changed. Bama also knows the only area where they can attempt to measure up to AU is in football, therefore, they have always committed more resources, paid more for players, coaches, and facilities.
Until saban got to bama, Tuscaloosa was a total shithole of a campus compared to AU. Saban has helped to get the campus up to AU levels, but as far as the institution goes, it is lipstick on a pig.
And of course you have the saying that bama fans care about bama football while AU fans care about Auburn. That has always been true.
