What do you base this opinion on?

From visiting many times. The University of Alabama has a beautiful campus, but once you get off campus there is nothing nice about the city. The Strip is a sketchy. It certainly lacks the southern charm that oozes from places like Athens, Oxford, Fayetteville, Auburn, etc.

Also, Tuscaloosa is pretty dangerous. If you look at the 10 Alabama cities with at least 40,000 residents (as of 2010), here is how they rank in terms of violent crime rate:

1,517.8- Birmingham
923.3- Huntsville
593.6- Mobile
519.7- Tuscaloosa
481.3- Dothan
427.6- Decatur
395.7- Montgomery
249.9- Auburn
205.2- Madison
104.5- Hoover

As you can see, Tuscaloosa has twice the violent crime rate.

You clearly haven't been to Downtown Tuscaloosa in the last 5-10 years.

So let me get this straight - you think Fayetteville, Arkansas oozes "southern charm" more than Tuscaloosa, Alabama? Really?

Shocker, those are 4 of the 5 largest cities in the state as well. Tuscaloosa has crime like other cities of 90K+ have crime.

All in all, good luck with helping your kid pick their college. But if you aren't going to let them go to Alabama for the reasons you have mentioned so far then that is a pretty ignorant way to mentor them.

Fair enough. I think the campus and downtown area of Tuscaloosa is just as nice as Athens, and the areas of both outside of those are pretty comparable in their blandness. Neither really scream southern charm to me, but that's just me.

Majority of Tuscaloosa's violent crime is isolated to certain areas of town and rarely impact the campus area. I lived there for several years and never had it impact me, nor never witnessed any firsthand.
