It's because in every other conference, the offense is centered around the QB and offenses are built around that position. In the SEC, most of your offenses are centered around RBs and built around the RB position. Doesn't matter how many recruiting stars your QB recruits have. The offenses are built around the RB position, so the QBs aren't the emphasis in your offense and they achieve predictable results accordingly.

Has nothing to do with "playing defense around here". I don't know where that narrative even comes from. At any given time in peak SEC years, there are only 2-3 teams in that league that have good defenses. Everybody else is very average to below average.

I don't think that is really true anymore. The only teams that still implement a run first philosophy are Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Georgia and Arkansas. Florida is pro-style, but McElwain is not a ground and pound guy. Mullen adapts to his personel. A&M is air raid. Kentucky runs the spread. Tennessee runs a hybrid spread. Ole Miss is certainly not built around running backs.

As for the defenses, the SEC have better DL/LB talent every year than every other league. Whether the team defenses are better or not depends on the year, but the interior play in the SEC on defense is just light years better than other places.
