Question for LSU fans (and others) re: last kickoff

Bama's last possession had me scratching my head from an LSU perspective. With only one timeout Les could not call a TO. That said, down by only 14 with 9:18 left, why not onside kick then? Really looking for knowledgeable football answers as it would have been a conundrum for me. Certainly pin them deep and play field position was considered but in hindsight it seems, and proved to be, too risky.
