A friend asked me, "scrooster, when a victor claims a moral victory, what is it called? Is there a name for it?"
I didn't know how to answer. In all of my many years I had never heard of it before.
So my friend explained: "scrooster, let's say a highly ranked winner of a particular game, playing at home in front of their home crowd, had a particularly tough time beating another team who has a losing record, a team that can't finish, a team that has been struggling for years ... when a team beats that far inferior team and then claims what sounds a lot like a moral victory ... even though they won the game ... What is that called?"
So, still confused, I asked, "you mean the team that won claims a moral victory even after they were the actual victors?"
"Yes," he replied.
Damn, I was confused. The thought had never crossed my mind. It was like he was saying the winning team was making excuses for winning.
He went on to give another example. He said, "let's say the team that won, their coach for example, claims that his team was not in shape, had dead legs, etc., etc., explaining why his team played down to the competition ... all of that on top of their fans touting how close the loses (sic Moral Victories) their opponent has had."
"Ohhhhh, yeah ... well, I dunno," I said. "I guess you're right. If I ever noticed someone doing that, I dunno, I guess we could call them 'moral victors'?"
It's a new thing, rarely seen before.
Moral Victors.
Should we get used to seeing this sort of thing more frequently?
If it were added to the Webster Dictionary, what sort of example, how would it be defined? Moral Victors?
By comparison:
So this new thing, Moral Victors, would be as .... ?

Moral Victory
noun
a defeat that can be interpreted as a victory on moral terms, for example because the defeated party defended their principles or gave their all in an effort to be victorious - yet failed in the process.

Moral victories are victories within a defeat against the victor?

Yes, exactly. But what do you call it when the victor is claiming a moral victory?

Good God man. Saban can't even mention what he sees.
Y'all are losing your goddamn minds over absolutely nothing. Our players were tired after several games in a row. Holy shitballs. No coach has ever said that.

Well there are many ways you can spin this.
Is the victor a group of players?
Or is the victor an individual?

What do you call it when your coach gets so tired of losing that he quits halfway into the season? A moral loss?

Saban doesn't care what your friend calls Bama.
All he speaks is calculated. It's for his own team to get themselves together and play harder.
Would you rather him blow unwarranted smoke on his players, a LA Gus Mahlzahn to Jeremy Johnson preseason, only to have it backfire?
Bama didn't play like it could, in fact Gary Danielson was pointing out the same thing during the game.

Well ... let's say we exclude the actual players, but include the people that follow and worship the players and also include the individual that leads said players and followers. You know, the so-called messiah of said group.

Our Messiah lives. The thought of facing Vanderbilt killed your Messiah.

Auburn and SCAR played eight games in a row for twenty years after the first expansion and I can honestly say I never heard an Auburn coach or a SCAR coach blame eight straight games on a close victory.
Think about that ... blaming eight straight games on a close victory.
I'll type it again with emphasis, "blaming eight straight games on a close victory."
Just sayin'.

sort of like beating Mizzou 9 - 6 right now,,
it's a "moral loss".

does sc even have a moral victory

Why do some Carolina fans/alumni, of all people, have a stick up their arse about Saban and Bama? We haven't even played in five years. Is it just mimicking the HBC?

We don't believe in them.
And more importantly and apropos, we will never claim that we are moral victors either.
We take wins and losses the old fashioned way ... like men.
But this thread is not about SCAR, now is it. Although I'm digging the feminine propensity towards deflection management that I am seeing in this thread. It gives me great joy ... yet it fails to address the simple question asked.

You don't constantly cling to Aub and SCar coaches every word and try to make some butthurt out of it. That's the difference
