He didnt start out with Lattimore at USC....so thats not the reason. Things change, defenses usually catch up with offenses sooner or later.

Remember that back in the mid-late 1970s even Bear Bryant ran the triple option wishbone which had sweep the nation for a half dozen or so years...except Ga Tech which is in time lock. Bryants wishbone years produced a NC. Why was his wishbone so successful? It really wasnt...but his defense was salty as hell. I saw his wishbone team close and personal in 1979...a NC season. AU, UF ran the wishbone also but didnt have the defense.

Spurrier never was one who liked recruiting, it took him away from golf. It was guys like Ron Zook who would do all the heavy lifting and he was one of the best in the business back then. Spurrier was a gameday coach who could beat you with Xs & Os.

I think we can agree he'd rather be golfing.

Also, with regards to your Bear/wishbone/defense comment, I have overlooked the fact that the defenses he had at Florida were full of NFL talent as well. That made for a great offense undoubtedly.
