The amount of rules and the minutiae they cover is truly mind boggling. BTW is that why drop kicks are no longer allowed? The kicker does not have possesion?

Drop kicks are still allowed, but the ball must be dropped by the player in possession of the ball and kicked "simultaneously" when the ball strikes the ground. It's Too complicated to execute well with today's footballs that have sharper points than those of 40 and 50+ years ago that looked/bounced more like a rugby ball.
