Here is the story he told last night:

quote:

The Tennessee game to me is the most important game of the year. I take it very personal. Not because it’s a great rivalry; it’s not, we kick their arse at will most years. In 1990 I lived and worked in Gainesville. I was a property manager. The week before the Tennessee game the most horrific events happened in Gainesville; the Gainesville Student Murders. To this day I remember their names by heart; Sonja Larson, Christina Powell, Christa Hoyt, Manny Taboada, and Tracy Paules. I remember their faces, I know what they look like. Because of my standing in the community at that time I knew Gainesville Mayor Courtland Collier and Police Chief Wayland Clifton personally. My wife worked at the police department. I know more about those murders than anyone would ever want to know. It was Steve Spurrier’s first year as Head Coach. The town, the school, the students, the football team; we were all devastated. No one was thinking about football. The thought of even playing the game was utterly ridiculous. As chance would have it both Tennessee and us had the same week off in October. Gator administration reached out to Tennessee to reschedule the game. Tennessee refused! No one could believe it! Our Gator’s went up to Knoxville and played without emotion; understandably so. We kept it tight for the first half down just 7-3. The second half Tennessee took advantage and crushed us. We lost 45-3. Here’s where it gets REALLY personal for me. In the waning minutes of the game, over 100,000 Tennessee fans chanted “OUR STUDENTS DON’T GET KILLED!” over and over on National TV! So, to me, this game, every year, IT’S PERSONAL!

Can anyone confirm that UTK actually refused the request to reschedule?

Any footage from that game where this chant can be heard?

I find this really hard to believe, the chanting part anyway

it is a matter of historical record insofar as the date the game was played AND when each team had bye weeks - can any UF person offer up any proof that the Gator administration asked to reschedule? Because THAT part of this story is really easy to believe, in fact, I can hardly imagine that UF would not have made that request

I remember these murders as well - Danny Rollins - right? I was a student at UGA at the time

Following that game rumors spread, which persist to this day, that Tennessee fans had chants referencing the Gainesville student murders. In fact, the idea of Tennessee fans doing this led some at the 1991 game to bring even more hatred. But, there is no documentation of this chant and everything is second hand from people at the 1991 game in Gainesville. So is it an urban myth? I asked the expert, former FTC commissioner and writer of EDSBS, Orson Swindle if this was true.

I've heard it, too, but have nothing specific to even come close to backing it up as hearsay. I think it's the Tennessee equivalent of Alabama's claim that Florida fans cheered when Tyrone Prothro's foot fell off in Tuscaloosa. It's delirious rumor, as far as I know.
ps. I emphasize: this is unsubstantiated crap.

For what it's worth...I was at the 1990 game. My girlfriend at the time started feeling sick, so we left at halftime...I was walking across Circle Park when I heard Dale Carter return the 2nd half kickoff back to start the scoring barrage. I never heard any sort of cheers regarding Florida murders while I was in attendance.

As for rescheduling...I never heard of Florida requesting that the game be rescheduled...but both teams did have an open date on October 27th. If the game were rescheduled to that date, Florida would lose their open date before facing #4 Auburn and Tennessee would lose their open date before facing #1 Notre Dame.

Negative- this game was played on October 13- Florida had played five games after the murders occured and before the Tennessee Florida game was played

Any footage from that game where this chant can be heard?

Nothing can be heard from this footage: LINK

Also- he claims 100,000 people chanted it. Neyland had a capacity of 90,000 at the time.
