Not sure about getting exposed per se - he is an offensive excellent coach, or was in the season they went to the championship game and has been for years. To me, he doesn't wear the "Head Coach" mantle well. He is micromanaging from the sideline on offense - I don't see how an offensive coordinator and/or other offensive coaches can get anything done with him yelling all the time and directing people. Doesn't he have coaches he pays to do that? Let the guys you hired take of things and act like the guy in charge.
It's obvious there have been some communication issues from the sideline to the field. But someone on that coaching staff dropped the ball in their pre-season training/development of JJ. The kid looks lost.

The same reason Petrino keeps the same guys around him at all times no matter where he is coaching. They are yes men, incapable of standing in their own. He can take full control of the offense and he has someone to throw under the bus when he messes up himself. Isn't this obvious?
