OPELIKA, Ala. —

A Montgomery man is appealing his convictions in the shooting deaths of two former Auburn University football players and a third man.

The Opelika-Auburn News (https://bit.ly/1EHslNF ) reports Desmonte Leonard is asking the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals to overturn his conviction in the 2012 killings.

His attorney filed the appeal this week.

Leonard is serving life without parole after being convicted last year of fatally shooting three people during a party at an apartment complex in Auburn in June 2012.

The victims included two former Auburn University football players. Ed Christian and Ladarious Phillips. DeMario Pitts also died, and three others were hurt.

Leonard was convicted of capital murder. He contends the judge made errors that include refusing to let jurors consider a lesser charge.

Most likely nothing to come of it, but fyi anyways.

Why would he not appeal?

He may deserve the punishment but pretty sure he has nothing to lose
