watson could have gone anywhere. he chose Clemson.

why was a public university started in GA so early, given the state was basicaly wilderness with no Atlanta at that time.

Georgia being a forward thinking state decided it wanted to start a center of learning founded in a city that would resemble the ancient Greek center of thought and philosophy (Athens). So it selected 40k acres of newly seized land up North that had been virtually untouched.
