If you can get to at least 24 semester hours then the Alumni Association will consider you an alumnus. Consider taking correspondence courses to get there. They still count towards that 24 and then you can join the Alumni Association. You might not be a degreed at UT alum but that doesn't matter - you'll still get the Alumni Association benefits (and probably the fundraising letters too ).
And no you're not a dirty sidewalker as you have a connection to the university, were taught at the university and had to leave due to finances. That's not your fault and it happens to a lot of people.
Go back when you can and get that degree - you'll love it and if you're like me it meant the world. People around here talk so much about how many generations attended their school and it blows my mind. I was the first in my immediate family to graduate college and I'm proud as hell about that.
