The 5 loses weren't unexpected

They were picked 2nd in the West and finished tied in 4th.

You act like the difference between 2nd and 4th is 30 games. Auburn was a butt fumble and a couple of defensive stops away from being 2nd. Not that anyone cares who finishes 2nd. 4th, 2nd, West Champs but loose the SEC title game none of that matters. Looser worry about stuff like that. Everyone who picked them offered a disclaimer about their schedule.

Most football minds believe that is a better strategy than Sumlin's pitch and catch philosophy

They do? Is that why more people throw the ball than ever before? Also Sumlin & A&M are working to build a power run game to go with the spread passing attach.

A&M may be working on a power run game, but Gus' offense is built on it. It runs better when Auburn can run. People aren't throwing the ball more than ever like you suggest. Championship teams are always very capable of running the ball at all levels still. A&M has been poor at this under Sumlin. Could it change? Yes. I am hopeful Auburn's poor defense is going to change.
