The nationwide consensus is probably the Iron Bowl.
The states of Michigan and Ohio are both top ten in the country in population. And both UM and OSU are the major sports teams in each state.
Michigan and Ohio AS STATES are rivals, beyond football. They went to fricking war for crying out loud. OTOH, both Aub and Bama are in the same sparsely populated state that, let's be honest, is not that influential or populous.

TV ratings and pretty much every list of greatest college football rivalries indicate otherwise
