I had a Tens device(I think that's what it's called) when I had herniated discs. It helped a little to hook it up after doing some stretches and exercises. Other times it didn't help at all. I only paid about $60 for it.

Up until my surgery, the only thing that really helped ease the pain(and a lot of mine was sciatic nerve pain) was stretching. The last month or two before I finally had surgery, the stretching didn't even help. It was sheer misery.

Best stretch I found was lie on your back, extend one leg out flat. Extend the other leg up towards the sky and get it as straight as you can, while also tilting your foot so your toes come towards your head. Put two hands on the back of your thigh and gently pull and hold it there about 20 seconds. Then switch to the other leg. I got up to doing about 5 sets of those every morning. It'll stretch out that hamstring and lower back muscles.
