Does "Broadway" Joe count as an SEC nickname? I wasn't around back then but I have a feeling that Namath was dubbed "Broadway" in New York and not in Tuscaloosa.

You're right. Namath was known as "Joe Willie" while playing for Alabama. He didn't become "Broadway Joe" until he went pro..

I forgot Johnny Musso - The "Italian Stallion" and Ozzie Newsome - "The Wizard of Oz".

More from way back....

"Bully" Van de Graaff
Arthur P. "Tarzan" White
Johnny "Hurri" Cain
