The musical snobbery thing was in Athens well before REM made any noise. In fact, by 1988 when REM 'sold out' they were very much on the outs with the Townies. It was very uncool to like REM by then. That snobbery still exists and then there are snobs of snobs. It is very confusing.
In fact, the schtick of the tatoo country movement is really similar in look and feel to the 80s Americam Pop Punk thing.

It doesn't matter whether we are talking about TV, Movies or Music--ninety percent of everything is crap.
