Much of this can be attributed to the Catholics in big cities 2 and 3 generations ago. Inner city schools may not have had a baseball or football team but in my youth they all had a basketball team and a boxing team.Seems like in the 70's and 80's they were phasing out boxing but all kept their basketball teams.
