I'm easing the wife into it. We've done a few day hikes locally (south MS) on the Black Creek Trail. Don't think she's ready for the rigors of a long hike, but she loves camping and doesn't mind roughing it. I just don't won't to bite off too much and ruin it for her and she never want to go again.

My wife hates camping and we've had a very happy marriage with me never once taking her camping, let alone backpacking. This has worked out just fine as we have 3 sons so I take them into the wild while my wife goes shopping with my sister or something. For the overnighter tomorrow, she's dropping me off while she goes shopping with her sister. The following week when I leave for the extended trip, she's heading to Boston with my sister. Works out for us both.

We do go on walks together about every day. But she leaves the camping/backpacking to me and I am fine with that.

You do what works. We do a lot of car camping with the boys (I have 2) and a canoe camping trip every once in a while. She's happy with that and I won't push her into backpacking if it isn't for her. I've just been testing it to see if she can handle the physical abuse. My 9 year old has done a 20 mile hike with me and performed like a champ (with 18 pounds on his back). Still a few years away for my youngest to get on the trail with a pack.
