I still shake my head at Richt when it comes to Shockley. I understand that it really was a wealth of riches for y'all with both he and Greene on the roster, but I still think Shockley was your best chance at winning it all
There's simply no way to say that. DJ was tremendous for us, no doubt. But how could you rightly say he should have started over Greene after 2001? You can't. Greene did everything we asked/he needed to do. In fact, the reason we didn't play for a title in 02 is because of DJ shockley (partially, anyway). Greene started 5/5 with a TD and we were in control. We put DJ in and he lost his rhythm. And of course he later threw a pick 6.
I love shock, he was a fantastic QB, but I don't see anyway that you could have made a fool proof case back then that he should have been the starter.

That one season with Shockley was an injury in garbage time away from getting y'all to the BCSCG.
He got hurt in the 2nd quarter against arkansas, not garbage time. And even when he came back full strength against AU, we still lost. We wouldnt' have gone ahead of USC/UT anyway, even with a win over UF.

There was something about that season that I'm misremembering then. Seems like Shockley got hurt in a situation where he shouldn't have been on the field. I remember that Auburn game well - what a damn heartbreaker. Tough game all around.
My point was, Shockley seemed to lift the team when it looked like they were out of it. That was an impressive season capped by a SECCG win over #3(I think) LSU ... but then that damn WVU game. Anyway, think of what he did in that one year, then imagine if that level of talent and special ability had been starting for you for three or four years.
I get what you're saying about Greene, though ... again, abundance of wealth at that position during those years.
