Way back in the day, Don Meredith really, eally wanted to play for Coach Bryant at A&M, but tearfully declined, telling Coach Bryant "Coach, if only you were anywhere, ANYWHERE else?"

College Station isn't that great right now but back in Don's day it was terrible.

So, mandatory military-style education and lack of co-eds DID seriously hurt A&M recruiting in the 1950's and 60's.
