The direction of UGA

So I just read this article and fully agree.
LINK /
I think most of us that follow UGA, recruiting, etc so closely can see that their is a change in the atmosphere surrounding the Dawgs. Recruiting looks to be going from a top 10 to a top 5 overall ranking. The funding for IPF is now being made. And the quality of coaches (granted, I'm skeptical at this point about Schotty) is there.
I've been in Richt's corner every single year since he's been here. I really want him to win one because 1. it's my Dawgs and 2. he's done it the 'right' way. Needless to say, I'm a Richt supporter albeit blind at times.
However, I have to say by 2017 we should at least have a SEC Championship. And preferably a National Championship. If not, then I'm for a change.
What say you?

I am not sure how anyone can question whether or not Schotty is a good coach. We haven't seen any of his work really. Spring is not a good sample because the defense knows everything you're running.
Personally, I think NC by 2017 is pretty high unless Ramsey develops into a first round draft pick. Remember Stafford took 2 full years to be really good. If Eason takes over it could take more than 2 years before we see really how good he can be.

You don't need a great QB to win a national championship. You mainly need a running game and defense.

If you can't throw it, it's hard to run it.
If you can't run it, it's hard to throw it.
And as of now we don't have a serviceable QB who can get us in the right plays or make good decisions with the ball. That can change throughout summer and fall camp though.

I agree that top 5 recruiting is part of what has been missing in forming a NC team. People like to cite UGA/Richt as doing less with more but top 10 recruiting with our level of attrition doesn't cut it. When you add in the previous lack of commitment by our AD/admins in terms of assistance coaching salaries and support staff, then we basically had created a budget friendly self fulfilling prophecy that yielded solid results but was lacking in NC potential. Hopefully improved results will follow the renewed enthusiasm. Goooooooo Dawgs!!

I dont believe that CMR will ever get it done. When the game is left in his hands he screws up time and time again. He just doesnt have it. Those that point to the "lack of commitment by our AD" are just refusing to point the finger at who it should be pointed towards. CMR hasn't won a conference title since 2005. Which is beyond inexcusable. The renewed enthusiasm is because CMR knows he wont be fired because JM just gave him a fat extension and a buyout.
I will cheer as loud as I can. But at the end of the day. I just don't believe he can bring home a National Title.
Downvote all you want.

CMR is a victim of his own success. Remember how long it had been since UGA won an SEC title before he got to Athens?

Overreaction. The end of the GT game was terrible, but when was the last couple screw ups that lead to your generalization? Keep in mind Bobo decided not to run it with Gurley at USC last year.

Richt hasn't done anything different recently. He has operated the same, IMO. The difference was the AD shelling out money for Pruitt and more staff, which is already paying dividends on the recruiting trail

By your logic, he is working harder because he just got more money and knows he won't be fired anytime soon?

Don't mind if I do.

So what?? An icon was finishing his career in the 80's and then we had back to back failures with Goff and Donnan. If we want to thump our chests about being a Big 6 school, we need to start acting like it.

True. But this thread is about the direction of UGA, and anyone who thinks we aren't trending up right now doesn't have a clue. We aren't playing games right now - all we can do is recruit like the heavyweights we want to be, and we are beating the hell out of the recruiting trail these days.

Any "great" coach would have told his OC RUN THE BALL 4 times.

Working harder? What proof of there is that? I dont see any proof. The staff is working their butts off. But I dont hear anything about CMR.

Every single one of our rivals has won a national title since 1980. But we act like we deserve a seat at the table. The fact is with CMR we are just good enough for him not to get fired and to celebrate new years at the Bloomin Onion or Citrus Bowl.

IMO, the importance of the head coach in college football is way overstated with very few exceptions in history. Generally you get exactly what your program pays for.

This argument is just another one that comes from a good portion of our fans that think we're historically a better program than we actually have been. Aside from the Herschel/Dooley combo years, UGA hasn't been that nationally relevant of a program. Richt has elevated us to a place we weren't at often before his tenure. Now, is he the man to take us even one level further and win a natty? Maybe not, but let's not discredit what he's accomplished.

I will refer to your own comment:

How do you measure his enthusiasm? By your own comment, you don't hear anything about CMR, no proof that he is working his butt off. So you are attributing all of the positive momentum in the program right now to everyone but the guy at the top?
This conversation always ends quickly when a name of a suitable replacement for Richt is requested. Who do you think we could plug in there and immediately go to the next level?

I dont discredit what he has accomplished but I dont think he is that guy.

Yes. Yes I am. The staff is hungry and they are busting their tails for the program. Everyone talks about how "enthusiastic" CMR appears. I think it is simply because he cant be touched. I dont think any coach who hasn't won a Natty at their respective school should feel this way.

Personally? If the hire was to me made today. I would hire Mark Hudspeth.

You might be right but now with a solid DC in Pruitt and a higher level of commitment from our AD/admins, we should see improved results in the next 5 years, otherwise it might well point to Richt as the limiting factor. Regardless, these ongoing losses to SC are getting old.

I'd rather just hire Pruitt or Bobo. At least recruits, media, and boosters know who they are, and they've been in big programs before so they know what to expect.

You have a lot of opinions about how hard Richt is working and how much he has a hand in our current trajectory. I don't think anyone on this board has facts to prove or deny those opinions, so it isn't worth talking about. But if you put anyone else in there (aside from Pruitt - good call there Crow), I don't think we are set up nearly as well for the next 3-4 years.
If we assume the biggest names are not attainable, getting someone like Hudspeth means a huge rebuild. You lose some guys who are already committed (like Eason) and you lose a lot of the progress with recruits who are leaning towards UGA. That effect right there would stall the program's ascent, and at that point you would be betting on Hudspeth to get up to speed and surpass Richt's abilities within a year or two. Pretty tall task.
Then you get into bigger issues - rebuilding means less success initially, most likely, and someone like Pruitt (who I will admit, seems like the rock in the program right now) is more likely to go elsewhere. Pruitt has gone on record as saying he came to UGA specifically to work with Richt.
There is a huge chain of what-ifs that come along with changing HC right now, and it would be like finding a needle in a haystack to get someone who could do it seamlessly.
Regardless of whether he has been working just as hard as everyone else or if he is just the luckiest man in America to have this staff assembled around him, he is going to get another few years to see what happens. And I am 100% sure that it is the right way to go for the sake of the program. Hopefully we look back at these arguments and laugh until we cry, and then wipe our tears on the multiple trophies we have won
