Yeah, AU had no idea what it was getting into in Knoxville that day. Expecting to face a very mediocre team, AU was actually facing a top 5 team that was better than AU and a home underdog.

I don't think any team that played them that year had any real idea but especially Auburn since that game was so early for us. Even on the week of the bowl game, the press was doing features on Miami and basically ignoring us. The bowl coverage was all Miami all the time. No one gave us a chance despite what the team had done all year and despite them finishing strong even after Robinson was injured after the 5th game. The Miami captains wouldn't even shake our captains' hands before the game. But like I said, we'd been 7-5 the year before (well 7-4-1) and had been in our longest stretch of rebuilding and it took beating Miami in the post-season for us to get any credit at all for the season we were having.

That team, the Sugar Vols, wound up being one of the most beloved teams we've ever had and still is.
